Gosho 撰時抄 Selection of Times

平頼綱、日蓮大聖人を襲う。Nichiren Daishonin set upon by Yoritsuna Tairano.

二には去(いに)し文永八年九月十二日申(さる)の時に平(へいの)左衛門尉に向つて云く、日蓮は日本国の棟梁(とうりょう)なり、予(よ)を失なうは日本国の柱橦(はしら)を倒すなり、

The second time was the twelfth day of the ninth month of the eighth year of the Bun’ei era (1271), at the hour of the monkey (3:00–5:00 p.m.), when I said to Hei no Saemon-no-jō: “Nichiren is the pillar and beam of Japan. Doing away with me is toppling the pillar of Japan!

The second remonstration was executed in the hour of the Monkey of the twelfth day of the ninth month in the eighth year of Bunnei (1271), when I declared to Hei-no sa’emon-no-jō Yoritsuna, “Nichiren is the master of Japan; killing Nichiren means toppling the pillar of Japan".

The second time was that the twelfth day of September of the eighth year of the Bun'ei era (1271), in the hour of the monkey (from 3:00 p.m to 5 :00 p.m.), I said to Heino Saemonnojo: “Nichiren is the pillar of Japan. Being bereaved of me, Nichiren, is that the pillar of Japan topple down!".

只今に自(じ)界(かい)反逆難(ほんぎゃくなん)とてどしうちして他(た)国(こく)侵逼難(しんぴつなん)とて此の国の人人・他国に打ち殺さるのみならず、多くいけどりにせらるべし、

"Immediately you will all face ‘the calamity of revolt within one’s own domain,’ or strife among yourselves, and also ‘the calamity of invasion from foreign lands’. Not only will the people of our nation be put to death by foreign invaders, but many of them will be taken prisoner".

"If the nation loses Nichiren, the disaster of revolt from within or violent conflict [within the Hōjō clan] will occur. And the disaster of foreign invasion will appear. People in Japan will be slaughtered by the invaders, and many will be captured alive".

"Immediately an intense fight which is called ‘the calamity of revolt within own domain' breaks out between the clan, and also there will be ‘the calamity of invasion from foreign country'. Not only will the people of our nation be killed by foreign invaders, but many of them will be taken prisoner".

建長寺・寿(じゅ)福(ふく)寺・極楽寺・大仏・長楽寺等の一切の念仏者・禅僧等が寺塔をばや(焼)きはらいて彼等が頚(くび)をゆ(由)ひ(比)のはま(浜)にて切らずば、日本国必ずほろぶべしと申し候了(おわん)ぬ、

"All the Nembutsu and Zen temples, such as Kenchō-ji, Jufuku-ji, Gokuraku-ji, Daibutsu-den,and Chōraku-ji, should be burned to the ground, and their priests taken to Yui Beach to have their heads cut off. If this is not done, then Japan is certain to be destroyed!”.

"If all temples and pagodas such as Kenchōji, Jufukuji, Gokurakuji, Daibutsuden, and Chōrakuji, which are inhabitedby Nembutsu or Zen monks, are not burned down, and these monks are not beheaded at Yuigahama Beach, the nation will definitely perish".

"You should burn the temples such as Kenchji Temple, Jufukuji, Gokurakuji, Daibutsuden, and Chorakuji to the ground, and you should take the Nembutsu and Zen priests to Yui Beach to cut off their heads. If this is not done, then Japan is certain to perish!”.
