GOSHO 上野尼御前御返事 Wu-lung and I-lung 10

汝我が子として遺言なりと申せしかば、其の言(ことば)炎と成つて身を責め、剣と成つて天より雨(ふ)り下(くだ)る。

Whenever you insisted upon adhering to my will, your words would either turn into flames and torment me, or be transformed into swords that rained down from heaven upon me.

“Whenever you, my son, said that you were only following my wishes, your words turned into the very flames that tortured me, or were transformed into swords that rained down upon me from above.

汝が不孝極(きわま)り無かりしかども我が遺言を違(たが)へざりし故に自業(じごう)自得果(じとくか)うらみがた(難)かりし所に、

Your behavior was unfilial in the extreme. However, since you were acting thus in order to abide by my will, I knew I could not entertain a grudge against you, for I was only receiving the retribution for my own deeds.

“Your actions could not have been more unfilial ! However, you were just abiding by my wishes and I was only suffering the natural consequences of my own deeds. Therefore, I could not rightfully bear a grudge against anyone.”

金色(こんじき)の仏一体、無間地獄に出現して仮使(けし)遍(へん)法界(ほうかい)・断(だん)善(ぜん)諸衆生(しょしゅじょう)・一聞(もん)法華経(ほけきょう)・決定(けつじょう)成(じょう)菩提(ぼだい)（仮使(たとい)法界に遍せる断善の諸の衆生も、一たび法華経を聞かば決定して菩提を成ぜん）と云云。

　“While I was thinking thus, a golden Buddha suddenly appeared in the hell of incessant suffering and declared, ‘Even those who have destroyed enough good causes to fill the entire realm of phenomena, if they hear the Lotus Sutra just once, will never fail to attain enlightenment.’

“When I became resigned to my fate, a golden Buddha suddenly appeared in the midst of the Hell of Incessant Suffering and recited,‘Even if those who have destroyed good causes fill the entire universe, they will without fail,　attain Buddhahood if they hear the Lotus Sutra even once.’

此の仏、無間(むけん)地獄に入り給いしかば、大水を大火になげたるが如し。

　When this Buddha entered the hell of incessant suffering, it was as if a deluge of water had been poured over a great fire.

　The moment that this Buddha entered the Hell of Incessant Suffering, it was as if an inferno had been doused with water.
