GOSHO 南条殿御返事(南条抄)The Person and the Law 1

The Person and the Law

    11 September 1281(Age: 60)

I have received your gifts of a horseload of salt, a sack of soybeans, a bag of seaweed, and a bamboo container of sake.

I have received one horse-load of supplies including salt, one sack of soybeans, one package of seaweed and a bamboo container of sake.

I have not seen you since you returned home from the province of Kōzuke, and I have been wondering how you are. I can hardly find words to say how much I appreciate your sincerity in sending me a letter and the many gifts.

As you have not come to see me since your return from the province of Kozuke, I have been eagerly awaiting word from you and now your letter has arrived. I cannot fully express in words my gratitude for the sincere offerings you sent along with your letter.

As you well know, a sutra says that the boy Virtue Victorious, who offered a mud pie to the Buddha, was later reborn as King Ashoka, who ruled over most of the southern continent of Jambudvīpa.

As you know, Tokusho Doji gave mud pies to the Buddha as an offering. It is said that as a benefit of the merit he thereby gained, he was later reborn as the Great King Ashoka, who reigned overmost of India.

Since the Buddha is worthy of respect, the boy was able to receive this great reward even though the pie was only mud.

Mud pies have no intrinsic value but because of the immense virtue of the Buddha, Tokusho Doji received such great good fortune.
