GOSHO 上野殿御返事 The Teaching for the Latter Day 3


 此れのみならず・ふしぎ(不思議)()がひ()ども候ぞかし。

Moreover, we find that there are even more unfathomable distinctions that Shakyamuni Buddha drew between the sutras.

There are even more incomprehensible differences [between sutras].

法華経は釈迦仏・已今当の経経を皆()()へし()やぶ()りて、此の経のみ真実なりと()かせ給いて候いしかば、御弟子等用ゆる事なし。

In the Lotus Sutra, he suddenly refuted all the other sutras that he had preached, now preached, and would preach in the future, and declared that only the Lotus was true. But his disciples would not believe him.

In the Lotus Sutra, Shakyamuni disclaimed all the sutras he had previously preached, currently preached and would preach, declaring only the Lotus Sutra to be the full and complete truth. But his disciples could not accept this.

()の時・多宝仏・証明をくわ()へ十方の諸仏・舌を梵天につけ給いき。

At that time, Many Treasures Buddha came to bear witness to what Shakyamuni Buddha had said, and the Buddhas of the ten directions added their testimony to his, extending their tongues until they reached the Brahmā heaven.

It was then Taho Buddha arrived to lend his support [to Shakyamuni] and verify the truth of the Lotus Sutra, and all the Buddhas from throughout the ten directions concurred, extending their tongues up to the Brahma Heaven.

さて多宝仏はとび()らをたて十方の諸仏は本土に・かへらせ給いて後は、いかなる経経ありて法華経を釈迦仏やぶらせ給うとも、他人わゑ(和会)になりて・やぶりがたし。

After Many Treasures Buddha had closed the door of the treasure tower and the other Buddhas had returned to their original lands, not even Shakyamuni Buddha himself could have denied the Lotus Sutra, whatever other sutras he might have expounded in an effort to do so, because the other Buddhas had all joined in affirming its truth.

After that, Taho Buddha closed the door to the Treasure Tower and the assembled Buddhas returned to their original lands. Even since that time, no sutra that Shakyamuni might preach could, even if he wished it to, ever supersede the Lotus Sutra, which had been unanimously affirmed supreme by all Buddhas.

しかれば法華経已後の経経・普賢経・涅槃経等には、法華経をば・ほむ()る事はあれども()しる事なし。

That is why in the Universal Worthy and Nirvana sutras, which follow the Lotus Sutra, the Lotus Sutra is praised but never disparaged.

That is why the Universal worthy Sutra and Nirvana Sutra, although preached later, praise the Lotus Sutra and do not detract from it in the least.
