GOSHO 上野殿御返事 The Teaching for the Latter Day 2

臨終(りんじゅう)に南無阿弥陀仏と申しあはせて候人は、仏の金言なれば一定(いちじょう)往生(おうじょう)とこそ人も我も存じ候へ。

Most people believe that those who chant Namu Amida Butsu at the moment of death are sure to be reborn in the Pure Land, for those are the golden words of the Buddha.

The common belief among the people is that one who chants Nam-Amidabutsu at the last moment of life will surely go to the Pure Land, for the Buddha’s golden words taught so.

しかれども・いかなる事にてや候いけん。仏の()ひかへさせ給いて未顕(みけん)真実・正直(しゃ)方便と・()かせ給いて候が、あさましく候ぞ。

For some reason, however, the Buddha regretted and reversed his statement, saying, “[In these more than forty years], I have not yet revealed the truth,”and “Honestly discarding expedient means, [ I will preach only the unsurpassed way].

And yet, Shakyamuni Buddha unexpectedly renounced this teaching stating,I have not yet revealed the truth,andHonestly discarding expedient means [ I preach only the unsurpassed way].

()れを日蓮が申し候へば、そら()事うわのそらなりと日本国にはいか()られ候。

I have been teaching as the Buddha advocated, but all Japan has become enraged and denounced my words as groundless fabrications.

When I, Nichiren, taught the same thing, all Japan rose up in anger denouncing my words lies and fabrications.

此れのみならず仏の小乗経には十方(じっぽう)に仏なし一切衆生に仏性なしと・()かれて候へども、大乗経には十方に仏まします一切衆生に仏性ありと・()かれて候へば、たれか小乗経を用い候べき、(みな)大乗経をこそ信じ候へ。

There have been other occasions when the Buddha unexpectedly reversed an earlier teaching. In the Hinayana sutras he taught that there is no Buddha other than himself in any of the ten directions, and that living beings do not possess the Buddha nature. But in the Mahayana sutras he taught that there are Buddhas throughout the ten directions, and that the Buddha nature exists in every living being. How can there be anyone who still uses the Hinayana sutras? Everyone has since come to believe in the Mahayana sutras.

There were other instances [of theBuddha reversing his earlier teachings]. In the Hinayana sutras, Shakyamuni taught that in all the ten directions there was no other Buddha and that no other living beings possessed the Buddha nature. Yet in the Mahayana sutras, he revealed that Buddhas live in all ten directions of the universe and that the Buddha nature is inherent within all living beings. How could anyone still believe in the Hinayana sutrasNaturally, since that time all people have placed their faith in the Mahayana sutras.
