蹲鴟(いものかしら)くし()()き・焼米・栗・た()んな・()づつ()給び候い了んぬ。

I have received your offerings of taros, skewer-dried persimmons, parched rice, chestnuts, bamboo shoots, and bamboo containers of vinegar.

I have received your offering of taro, skewer-dried persimmons, roasted rice, chestnuts, bamboo sprouts and bamboo containers of vinegar.

月氏に阿育(あそか)大王と申す王をはしき、一閻浮提(えんぶだい)四分の一をたなご()ころににぎ()り、竜王をしたがへて雨を心にまかせ、鬼神をめしつかひ給いき。

There was once a ruler in India named Ashoka the Great. He reigned over a quarter of the land of Jambudvīpa and, accompanied by the dragon kings, controlled the rain at his will. He even used demons to do his bidding.

In India, there once lived a king named Ashoka the Great. Clinching a quarter of the world in the palms of his hands, he conquered the dragon kings who, as vassals, produced rain at his command. Even powerful demons did his bidding.

始は悪王なりしかども後には仏法に帰し、六万人の僧を日日に供養し、八万四千の石の塔をたて給う。

At first he was a merciless ruler, but later he converted to Buddhism. He made offerings to sixty thousand monks each day and erected eighty-four thousand stone stupas.

Although in the beginning he was a tyrant, following his conversion to Buddhism he made daily offerings to sixty thousand priests and erected eighty-four thousand stone stupas.

此の大王の過去をたづぬれば仏の在世に徳勝童子・無勝童子とて二人のをさ()なき人あり、土の餅を仏に供養し給いて一百年の内に大王と生れたり。

On inquiring into the previous lifetime of this great sovereign, we find that in the days of Shakyamuni Buddha there were two little boys called Virtue Victorious and Invincible who once offered the Buddha a mud pie. Because of this act of sincerity, the boy Virtue Victorious was reborn within one hundred years as King Ashoka.

Delving into this great king’s previous incarnations, we find that the time of Shakyamuni Buddha, there were two boys, Tokusho Doji and Musho Doji, who offered to the Buddha a mud pie they had made. As a result of this meritorious deed, Tokusho Doji was, within one hundred years, reborn as the great king Ashoka.
