GOSHO 立正安国論72 斬罪の用否 二

(はか)り知んぬ、善悪を論ぜず是非を(えら)ぶこと無く、僧侶()らんに(おい)ては供養(くよう)()ぶ可し、

If we stop to consider, we must realize that, regardless of whether one is good or bad, right or wrong, if he is a priest, then he deserves to have alms and nourishment extended to him.

It should be inferred from the sutras that offerings must be made to priests without questioning whether they are good or bad, or whether it is right or wrong to do so.

何ぞ()の子を打辱(だにく)して(かたじけな)くも其の父を悲哀(ひあい)せしめん、

For how could one beat and insult the son and still not cause grief and sorrow to the father?

How could you be so shameful as to cause the Buddha to lament by attacking and humiliating his child?

彼の(ちく)(じょう)目連(もくれん)尊者(そんじゃ)を害せしや永く無間(むけん)の底に沈み、提婆(だいば)(だっ)()蓮華(れんげ)比丘尼(びくに)を殺せしや久しく阿鼻(あび)(ほのお)(むせ)ぶ、

The Brahmans of the Bamboo Staff school who killed the Venerable Maudgalyāyana have for a long time been sunk in the depths of the hell of incessant suffering. Because Devadatta murdered the nun Utpalavarnā, he has for a long time gasped in the flames of the Avīchi hell.

Some of the Brahmans from the Bamboo Staff School have for almost an eternity remained sunk at the bottom of the hell of incessant suffering for killing Maudgalyayana. Devadatta murdered Nun Utpalavarna and then suffered in the flames of the hell of incessant suffering for a period of time beyond measure.

先証(せんしょう)()れ明かなり、(こう)(こん)最も(おそれ)あり、

Examples from earlier ages make the matter perfectly clear, and later ages fear this offense most of all.

These examples of earlier ages clearly show what we, of the later ages, should all fear most.

謗法(ほうぼう)(いまし)むるには似たれども(すで)に禁言を破る、()の事信じ(がた)し、如何(いかん)(こころ)()んや。

You speak of punishing those who slander the Law, but to do so would violate the Buddha’s prohibitions. I can hardly believe that such a course would be right. How can you justify that?

While it may appear that you are refuting slander, you are in fact defying the Buddha’s admonitions. I find your statements difficult to believe. How should Iinterpret them
