GOSHO 立正安国論68 施を止めて命を絶つ 十八

(しか)るに(ほう)(ぼう)(やから)正道を忘るの人・(あまつさ)(ほう)(ねん)選択(せんちゃく)()つて(いよい)愚癡(ぐち)盲瞽(もうこ)()す、

And yet those people who forget about the correct way and slander the Law put more trust than ever in Hōnen’s Nembutsu Chosen above All and grow blinder than ever in their foolishness.

Yet the slanderers have lost sight of the correct path; moreover, Hōnen’s The Sole Selection of Nembutsu has increased their foolish illusions and rendered them blind and deaf to the correct Law.

是を以て或は彼の遺体(いたい)(しの)びて木画(もくえ)の像に(あらわ)し、或は其の妄説(もうせつ)を信じて(ゆう)(げん)(かたぎ)()り之を海内(かいだい)に弘め之を郭外(かくがい)(もてあそ)ぶ、(あお)ぐ所は(すなわ)()の家風、(ほどこ)す所は(すなわ)ち其の門弟なり、(注:郭外の「郭」は略字。御書には「土」偏がつく)

Thus some of them, remembering how their master looked in life, fashion wooden sculptures and paintings of him, while others, putting faith in his perverse teachings, carve woodblocks with which to print his ugly words. These writings they scatter about throughout the area bounded by the seas, carrying them beyond the cities and into the countryside until, wherever honor is paid, it is to the practices of this school, and wherever alms are given, it is to the priests of this school.

Some have expressed their longing for the deceased Hōnen by creating wooden statues and paintings of his image. Others, trusting the groundless doctrines expounded in his writing, inscribed his evil words on wood blocks so they could be disseminated throughout the land, and they are now treasured everywhere. People perceive that the only traditions worthy of reverence are those of the Nembutsu, while the only people worthy of receiving alms are Hōnen’s diciples.
