又云く「若し五戒を受持せん者有らば、名けて大乗の人と為す事を得ず、
Again the Buddha said: “Even though there may be those who observe the five precepts, they do not deserve to be called practitioners of the great vehicle.
Merely abiding by the five precepts will never qualify one as a practitioner of the Mahayana teachings.
五戒を受けざれども、正法を護るを為て乃ち大乗と名く、
But even if one does not observe the five precepts, if one defends the correct teaching, then one may be called a practitioner of the great vehicle.
Even if one does not observe the five precepts, one may be called a practitioner of the Mahayana teachings if he protects the correct Law.
正法を護る者は当に刀剣器仗を執持すべし、
Defenders of the correct teaching ought to arm themselves with knives and swords, weapons and staves.
Those who protect the true Law must bear swords and other weapons.
刀杖を持すと雖も我是等を説きて名けて持戒と曰わん」と。
Even though they carry swords and staves, I would call them men who observe the precepts.”
Even though they possess swords and staves, they shall be called true upholders of the precepts.
