純陀、復た問いたてまつる、一闡提とは其の義何ん、
“Chunda spoke once more, asking, ‘What is the meaning of the term icchantika?’
Chunda then asked: “how would you describe icchantika?”
仏言わく、純陀若し比丘及び比丘尼・優婆塞・優婆夷有つて麁悪の言を発し、正法を誹謗し、是の重業を造つて永く改悔せず、心に懺悔無からん、
“The Buddha said: ‘Chunda, suppose there should be monks or nuns, lay men or women who speak careless and evil words and slander the correct teaching, and that they should go on committing these grave acts without ever showing any inclination to reform or any sign of repentance in their hearts.
The Buddha responded: “Chunda, icchantika are people, among the Buddhist monks, nuns, laymen and laywomen, who spew malicious words and slander the correct Law. Despite creating such severe karma, they refuse to repent over an extended period of time and have no intention to rectify their actions.
是くの如き等の人を名けて一闡提の道に趣向すと為す、
Persons of this kind I would say are following the path of the icchantika.
Such people are heading down the path of icchantika.”
