GOSHO 立正安国論54 施を止めて命を絶つ 四

即(すなわ)ち涅槃経(ねはんぎょう)に云く「仏の言(たまわ)く、唯(た)だ一人を除(のぞ)いて余の一切に施(ほどこ)さば皆讃(さん)歎(たん)す可(べ)し、

In the Nirvana Sutra, we read: “The Buddha said, ‘With the exception of one type of person, you may offer alms to all kinds of persons, and everyone will praise you.’

The Nirvana Sutra states: The Buddha said,“If one makes offerings in this world to anyone excluding one type of person, one’s behavior should be extolled.”

純陀(じゅんだ)問うて言く、云(い)何(か)なるをか名けて唯除(ゆいじょ)一人と為(な)す、

“Chunda said, ‘What do you mean when you speak of “one type of person?’

Chunda inquired:“Who is the one to be excluded？”

仏の言く、此の経の中に説く所の如きは破戒(はかい)なり、

“The Buddha replied, ‘I mean the type described in this sutra as violators of the precepts.’

The Buddha responded: “As taught in this sutra, the one who violates the precepts.”

純陀(じゅんだ)復(ま)た言く、我(われ)今未(いま)だ解(げ)せず、唯(ただ)願(ねがわ)くば之(これ)を説きたまえ、

“Chunda spoke again, saying, ‘I am afraid I still do not understand. May I ask you to explain further?’

Chunda then asked for clarification: “I am unable to understand your point. I beg you to further elaborate on it.”

仏純陀(じゅんだ)に語つて言く、破戒(はかい)とは謂(いわ)く一闡提(いっせんだい)なり、其の余の在所(あらゆる)一切に布施(ふせ)すれば、皆讃歎(さんたん)すべく大果報(かほう)を獲(え)ん、

“The Buddha addressed Chunda, saying, ‘By violators of the precepts, I mean the icchantika. In the case of all other types of persons, you may offer alms, everyone will praise you, and you will achieve great rewards.’

The Buddha turned to Chunda and said: “Those who break the precepts are icchantika. Making offerings to anyone other than icchantika is praiseworthy and allows one to receive immeasurable merit.”
