GOSHO 立正安国論51 施を止めて命を絶つ 一

客則(すなわ)ち和(やわら)ぎて曰(いわ)く、経を下(くだ)し僧を謗(ぼう)ずること一人には論じ難(がた)し、

The guest, continuing to speak in a mild manner, replied:One could hardly say that Hōnen is the only one who disparages sutras and speaks ill of other priests [since you do the same thing yourself].

The guest softened his demeanor and said: It is too difficult for me alone to determine whether or not Hōnen belittles the scriptures and slanders the priests.

然(しか)れども大乗経六百三十七部二千八百八十三巻並びに一切の諸仏菩薩及び諸(もろもろ)の世天等を以て捨閉閣抛(しゃへいかくほう)の四字に載(の)す、其の詞(ことば)勿論(もちろん)なり、其の文顕然(けんねん)なり、

　However, it is true that he takes the 637 Mahayana scriptures in 2,883 volumes, along with all the Buddhas and bodhisattvas and the deities of this world, and urges people to “discard, close, ignore, and abandon” them. There is no doubt that these four injunctions are his very words; the meaning of the passage is quite clear.

　Hōnen does include all the 2,883 fascicles of the 637 works of the Mahayana scriptures as well as all Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and guardian deities in his list of what must be “discarded, closed, ignored, and rejected.” This assertion is evident in his The Sole Ｓelection of Nembutsu.

此(こ)の瑕瑾(かきん)を守つて其の誹謗(ひぼう)を成せども、迷うて言うか覚(さと)りて語るか、賢愚(けんぐ)弁(べん)ぜず是非(ぜひ)定め難(がた)し、

But you keep harping on this one little “flaw in the jewel” and severely slandering him for it. I do not know whether he spoke out of delusion or out of enlightenment. Between you and Hōnen, I cannot tell which is wise and which is foolish, or determine whose assertions are right and whose are wrong.

[Even if these four words are mistaken,] what you are doing is excessively focusing on this negligible fault and denigrating him. There is no way of knowing whether your argument is based on illusion or enlightenment, nor can I tell whether you are wise or foolish. Thus I am unable to judge who is right or who is wrong.
