GOSHO 立正安国論45  和漢の例を出だす八


 又阮藉(げんせき)(いつ)(さい)なりしに蓬頭(ほうとう)(さん)(たい)す、

[ The Great Concentration and Insight passage goes on to say:] “Juan Chi was a man of extraordinary talent, but he let his hair grow like a mass of brambles and left his belt undone.

Also, a man by the name of Ruan Ji exceptional talent, but his hair was always long and tangled, and his sash was carelessly tied.

(のち)(こう)(けい)の子孫、皆(これ)(なら)いて奴苟(どこう)(あい)(はずか)しむる者を(まさ)自然(じねん)に達すと云い、撙節(そんせつ)兢持(きょうじ)する者を呼んで田舎(でんしゃ)と為す、

Later, the sons of the aristocracy all imitated him, until those who behaved in a churlish and insulting manner were thought to be acting quite naturally, and those who were restrained and proper in their behavior were ridiculed as mere peasants.

The offspring of the court nobles and high-ranking officials followed his example, even talking to each other using vulgar language, believing they would thus reach a state of naturalism. They looked down on individuals with self-discipline who observed decent manners, calling them country bumpkins.

是を司馬(しば)氏の滅する(そう)と為す已上。

This was a sign that the Ssu-ma family [the rulers of the Western Chin dynasty] would meet with their down fall.”

These were the signs seen before the fall of the Sima Western Jin) dynasty [265-316 CE].
