The second volume of Great Concentration and Insight quotes a passage from Records of the Historian that says, “In the closing years of the Chou dynasty, there were persons who let their hair hang down, went about naked to the waist, and did not observe the rites and regulations.”

In the second volume of the Great Concentration and Insight, there is a citation from Records of the Historian stating, “During the decline of the Zhou dynasty [Western Zhou 1046-771 BCE, Eastern Zhou 772-256 BCE] there were people who disregarded proper decorum, letting their hair grow wild and wearing their clothes in disarray.”

The Annotations on “Great Concentration and Insight,” in the second volume, explains this passage by quoting from Tso’s Commentary on “Spring and Autumn Annals” as follows: “When King P’ing of the Chou first moved his capital to the east, he saw men by the Yi River who let their hair hang down and performed sacrifices in the fields. Someone who had great understanding said, ‘In less than a hundred years the dynasty will fall, for the rites are already neglected.’”

The Great Teacher Miaole interprets this passage in the second volume of the Annotations on the Great Concentration and insight by referring to Zuo’s Commentary on Spring and Autumn Annals:After the capital was transferred to the east by King Ping [of the Zhou], people with unkempt hair were seen conducting a ritual in the fields in Yichuan. Observing this, a man of wisdom said that the Zhou dynasty would decline in less than one hundred years because the proprieties had already been lost.

From this it is evident that the portent appears first, and later the disaster itself comes about.

As you can see from this example, a portent manifests before a misfortune occurs.
