When we examine these passages, we see that Hōnen quotes the erroneous explanations of T’an-luan, Tao-ch’o, and Shan-tao, and establishes the categories of the Sacred Way and the Pure Land teachings, and of the difficult-to-practice and the easy-to-practice ways. He then takes all the 637 works in 2,883 volumes that comprise the Mahayana teachings of the Buddha’s lifetime, including those of the Lotus Sutra and the True Word sutras, along with all the Buddhas and bodhisattvas and the deities of this world, and assigns them all to the categories of the Sacred Way teachings, the difficult-to-practice way, and the sundry practices, and urges people to “discard, close, ignore, and abandon” them.

When I [the host] examine these passages cited from The Sole Selection of Nembutsu, it is evident that Hōnen, referring to erroneous interpretations given by Tanluan, Daochuo, and Shandao, made distinctions between the gateway of the sacred path and the gateway of the pure land, as well as between the difficult pathand the easy path.In addition to that, Hōnen placed the 2,883 fascicles of the 637 works of the Mahayana scriptures that were preached throughout Shakyamuni’s life, including the Lotus Sutra and the doctrine of Shingon, along with the various Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and guardian deities, into the categories of the gateway of the sacred path, the difficult path, and the miscellaneous practices. He then insisted on discarding, closing, ignoring, and rejecting all of them.

With these four injunctions, he leads all people astray. On top of that, he groups together all the sage monks of the three countries [of India, China, and Japan] as well as the students of Buddhism of the ten directions, and calls them a “band of robbers,” causing the people to insult them.

With these four words, he deluded numerous people. Furthermore, he went so far as to abuse the sacred priests in the three nations of India, China, and Japan, as well as the Buddha’s disciples in the ten directions by calling them all a herd of bandits.
