聖人知三世事 六 A Sage Knows the Three Existences of Life 6

　我が弟子仰(あお)いで之を見よ、

　My disciples, you should believe what I say and watch what happens.

　My disciples! Have faith in me and believe what I teach.

此れ偏(ひとえ)に日蓮が貴尊なるに非ず、法華経の御力の殊勝なるに依(よ)るなり。

These things do not occur because I myself am respectworthy, but because the power of the Lotus Sutra is supreme.

I say this is not because I am saintly or noble but because the power of the Lotus Sutra I embrace is singularly supreme.

身を挙(あ)ぐれば慢(まん)ずと想(おも)い、身を下せば経を蔑(あなど)る。

If I praise myself, people will think that I am boastful, but if I humble myself, they will despise the sutra.

If I exalt myself, people think me arrogant, yet were I to humble myself, they would hold the Lotus Sutra in contempt.

松高ければ藤長く源(みなもと)深ければ流れ遠し。

The taller the pine tree, the longer the wisteria vine hanging from it. The deeper the source, the longer the stream.

On a pine that is tall, wisteria grows long. If a springis deep, its waters stream unceasingly.

幸(さいわい)なるかな楽しいかな、穢土(えど)に於て喜(き)楽(らく)を受くるは但(ただ)日蓮一人なる而已(のみ)。

How fortunate, how joyful! In this impure land, I alone enjoy happiness and delight.

How fortunate and gratifying! In this impure land, only I, Nichiren, know the bliss of sublime freedom.
