総勘文抄五 The Unanimous Declaration5

我が身を生死(しょうじ)凡夫(ぼんぷ)なりと思う時は、夢に(ちょう)と成るが如く僻目(ひがめ)僻思(ひがおもい)なり、

While one believes that one is an ordinary person in the realm of birth and death, this is comparable to dreaming that one is a butterfly, a state of distorted views and distorted thoughts.

我が身は本覚(ほんがく)如来(にょらい)なりと思う時は、(もと)(そう)(しゅう)なるが如し、即身成仏なり 【本文

And when one realizes that one is the Thus Come One of original enlightenment, this state is comparable to the original Chuang Chou,or the attainment of Buddhahood in one’s present form.

故に玄義に云く「末代の学者多く経論の方便(ほうべん)断伏(だんぷく)(しゅう)して諍闘(じょうとう)す、

Hence Profound Meaning states: “Many scholars in this latter age seize on the various methods for cutting off delusion set forth in the sutras and treatises as an expedient means and argue over them.

水の(しょう)(ひやや)かなるが如きも、飲まずんば(いずく)んぞ知らん」本文

But as in the case with water, how can you tell whether it is cold or not unless you drink some?”

総じて一代の聖教は一人の法なれば、我が身の本体を()く能く知る可し、

Broadly speaking, the sacred teachings of the Buddha’s lifetime represent a Law or doctrine pertaining to the individual. One should thus strive to achieve a very clear understanding of one’s own original entity as an individual.

之を悟るを仏と云い、之に迷うは衆生なり 【本文

To awake to that is to be a Buddha, to be confused about that is to be an ordinary living being.
