Gosho 四条金吾殿御返事（八風抄) The Eight Winds

賢人は八風と申して八のかぜにをかされぬを賢人と申すなり、利(うるおい)・衰(おとろえ)・毀(やぶれ)・誉(ほまれ)・称(たたえ)・譏(そしり)・苦(くるしみ)・楽(たのしみ)なり、

Worthy persons deserve to be called so because they are not carried away by the eight winds: prosperity, decline, disgrace, honor, praise, censure, suffering, and pleasure.

をを心(むね)は利あるに・よろこばず・をとろうるになげかず等の事なり、

They are neither elated by prosperity nor grieved by decline.

此の八風にをかされぬ人をば必ず天はま(守)ほらせ給うなり

The heavenly gods will surely protect one who is unbending before the eight winds.

しかるを・ひり(非理)に主(しゅ)をうらみなんどし候へば・いかに申せども天ま(守)ほり給う事なし

But if you nurse an unreasonable grudge against your lord, they will not protect you, not for all your prayers.

だんな(檀那)と師とを(思)もひあ(合)わぬいの(祈)りは水の上に火をた(焚)くがごとし、

If lay believers and their teacher pray with differing minds, their prayers will be as futile as trying to kindle a fire on water.

又だんなと師とをもひあひて候へども大法を小法をもつて・を(犯)かしてと(年)しひさ(久)しき人人の御いのりは叶い候はぬ上、我が身も・だんなも・ほろび候なり。

Even if they pray with one mind, their prayers will go unanswered if they have long made the error of attacking greater teachings with lesser ones. Eventually, both laybelievers and their teacher will be ruined.
