Gosho 御義口伝下 Orally Transmitted teachings on the Lotus Sutra Part 2

第十三　常不値(ふち)仏(ぶつ)　不聞法(ふもんぽう)　不(ふ)見(けん)僧(そう)の事

Point Thirteen, concerning the passage

「得(とく)大勢(だいせい)、彼(か)の時の四(し)衆(しゅう)の比丘(びく)、比丘尼(びくに)、優(う)婆(ば)塞(そく)、優(う)婆(ば)夷(い)は瞋恚(しんに)の心を以て我を軽賤(きょうせん)せしが故に、二百億劫(こう)に常に仏に値(あ)わず、法を聞かず、僧を見ず、

“Gainer of Great Authority, at that time the four kinds of believers, the monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen, because anger arose intheir minds and they treated me with disparagement and contempt, were for two hundred million kalpas never able to encounter a Buddha, to hear the Law, or to see the community of monks.

千劫阿鼻(あび)地獄に於(お)いて大苦悩を受く」

For a thousand kalpas they underwent great suffering in the Avīchi hell.”

御義口伝に云く、此の文は不軽菩薩を軽賤(きょうせん)するが故に三宝を拝見せざる事、二百億劫地獄に堕(お)ちて大苦悩を受くと云えり、

The Record of the Orally TransmittedTeachings says: This passage relates how the four kinds of believers, because they treated the bodhisattva Never Disparaging with disparagement and contempt,were never able to encounter the three treasures for two hundred million kalpas, but fell into hell and underwent great suffering.

今末法に入つて日蓮等の類い南無妙法蓮華経と唱え奉る者を軽賤(きょうせん)せん事は彼に過ぎたり、

Butnow that we have entered the Latter Day of the Law, those who treat Nichiren and his followers, who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, with disparagement and contempt are even worse than those others.

彼は千劫、此れは至無数劫(しむしゅこう)なり。

Those others suffered for a thousand kalpas,but these will suffer “for a countless number of kalpas”.
