Gosho 御義口伝上 Orally Transmitted teachings on the Lotus Sutra Part 1

日蓮等の類い南無妙法蓮華経と唱え奉る者は一同に皆共(かいぐ)至宝処(しほうしょ)なり、

Nichiren and his followers, those who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, one and all will “together reach the place where the treasure is.”

共(ぐ)の一字は日蓮に共する時は宝処に至る可し

This one word “together” means that, as longas they are together with Nichiren, they will reach the treasure land.

不共ならば阿鼻(あび)大城(だいじょう)に堕(お)つ可し云云。

But if they are not together with him, they will fall into the great citadel of the Avīchi hell.

信心を以て衣(え)裏(り)にかくと云うなり。

The mind of faith is comparable to the jewel that is sewn into the robe.

今日蓮等の類い南無妙法蓮華経と唱え奉れば我則(がそく)歓喜とて釈尊歓喜し給うなり、

Within this joy is contained the joy of all the Buddhas of the three existences of past, present, and future. Now because Nichiren and his followers chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, Shakyamuni Buddha experiences joy, as he indicates in the words , “I will surely rejoice.”

歓喜とは善悪共に歓喜なり、

This joy is shared by the good and evilrealms alike.

十界同時なり、深く之を思う可し云云。

It is shared by the Ten Worlds simultaneously. You should give careful thought to this.

智者愚者をしなべて南無妙法蓮華経の記を説きて而強毒之(にごうどくし)するなり。

On all of them, wise and foolish alike, we bestow the prophecy of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, “preaching to them forcefully,though it angers them” .

大願とは法華弘通(ぐつう)なり

The “great vow” refers to the propagation of the Lotus Sutra.

「朝朝・仏と共に起き、夕夕(せきせき)仏と共に臥(ふ)し、

“Morning after morning we rise up with the Buddha, evening after evening we lie down with the Buddha.

時時に成道(じょうどう)し時時に顕本す」と云云。

Moment by moment we attain the way, moment by moment we reveal our true identity.”
