104 The Great Leader, Nikko Shonin (1)

                        Japanese ver.

Nikko spent forty-four summers after this in Ueno, Suruga of the foot of Fuji and went to glory at 88 years old.

Nikko establishes six disciples at end as a successor in the same way as Nichiren of the teacher. He appointed Nichimoku of "best disciple in disciples" and left the world.

Nichimoku meets Nikko at 15 years old in 1274. It was the time when Nichiren of the teacher was 53 years old, and he set up the thatched hut in Mount Minobu. And, on April 8, 1276 these two years later, Nikko let Nichimoku become a priest, on a birth day of Buddha.

Nichimoku became a disciple of Nikko openly, but Nikko promptly let Nichimoku have always conforming and service, for sake of Nichiren in Minobu, on November 24 of the same year. Probably Nikko ascertained ability of Nichimoku, he decided it was Nichimoku who could entrust with successor. It is guessed that Nikko intended to let Nichimoku walk a way same as himself.

Nikko wrote that he entrusted Nichimoku with "the propagating Law of the Nichiren's time" entrusted by teacher, in "The items which should obey after Nikko left" on January 13, 1333.

“1. When Hommonji Temple is established, Ni`ida-Kyō Ajari Nichimoku shall be designated as the chief of Buddha Law. Nichimoku, as the legitimate successor, should govern half of the temples located in the country of Japan and in the rest of the world, while the remaining half should be managed by others within the priesthood.

2. The Dai-Gohonzon of the second year of Kō`an (1279) Nikko inherited is hereby bequeathed to Nichimoku. It should be shrined at Hommonji Temple.

3. Taisekiji temple, including the main hall and the cemetery, are administered by Nichimoku, and maintain the premises, he conducts Gongyō and should await the time of Kōsen-ruhu.

As mentioned, Nichimoku met Nikko for the first time when he was 15 years old. From the time he took faith in the Lotus Sutra until the old age of 73 years, he has not disobeyed in the least. At age of 17, Nichimoku had visited Nichiren Daishonin at Mount Minobu in Kōshū Province. Nichimoku faithfully and constantly served teacher for the last seven years of the life of Nchiren Daishonin. After his master died, Nichimoku devoted himself to remonstrating with the Imperial Court for long time of fifty years, 1285 to 1330. Such achievements are superior to those of the other priests. I leave this documentary proof for future.

Nikko delivered the doctrine of Nichiren to Nichimoku of the next generation in this way and handed down it to the future generation without running out of a bloodline of succession of Kosen-rufu.

Nichiren of the teacher, during his lifetime, called Nikko as "a person who rescue for ten thousand years" and "a person who put across the water pot of Law" and, also called him " the great leader who was entrusted the essential teachings to".

A 'put across the water', it means that a person transfers the water of Law for future without wrong in such a way to move the water to the pot.

A "entrusted the essential teachings to", it means the ceremony where Shakyamuni Buddha granted the essential Law of the latter day of the Law to Jogyo Bodhisattva of leader of innumerable bodhisattvas of emerging from the ground in the Lotus Sutra.

The essential Law is the daimoku, title, of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

Nichiren called Nikko a great leader with Law of the essential. There was nothing wrong with Nichiren's judgement. And Nikko called Nichimoku who was entrusted with his future affairs as “holy chief priest of the whole world.”

I write down the next progress of Hakiri family from now.

Hakiri family who was also said to be Nanbu family was caught up for the battle of the northern and southern dynasties after Kamakura Shogunate extinction. They took side of the south dynasty of the Godaigo Emperor and fought, but were defeated to the north led by Taka'uzi Asikaga. After unification of the north and south dynasties too, Nambu family did not serve the Ashikaga north dynasty.

In 1393, the Nanbu clan abandoned all of the feudal tenure at last, and they left for far-off Tohoku. It is the 104th year after Nikko left the mountain. In addition, there was the clan of Hakiri who protected Kuonji temple of the Mt. Minobu which Nichiren had built, but, in 1527, they were subdued by father Nobutora of Shingen Takeda, and Hakiri clan of this land was completely ruined. The reason was the crime that Hakiri was secretly connected with Imagawa of Suruga in the neighboring country. There will be it according the sutra; "Who spits against heaven, it falls in his face." "Shame take him that shame thinks. "

It is said that Nikko was lonely in his later years. Even if he lectured, only several pupils gathered. Five main Buddhist priests all left, and pupils dispersed.

However, the numerical quantity is not important. Nikko fixed his eyes on the future, not the present. Time when this marvelous Law does Kosen-ruhu by all means will come sometime. He made up his mind that he earmarked a footprint of that route.

Nikko left the world at 88 years old on February 7, 1333, 52 years after Nichiren got to glory. On May 1 of this last year, fighting in the persecution of Atsuhara together, Tokimitsu Nanjo who was the friend of Law beyond the relations called a priest and the believer finishes 74 lives.

In 1333, the great matters happened together inside and outside.

Takauji Ashikaga revolted against the Hojo shogunate as having waited for death of Nikko on April 16. Yoshisada Nitta entraps Kamakura on May 21, and Hojo dies out on the next day. Emperor Godaigo went back to the imperial place of Kyoto, and, on June 5, new government of the Kenmu era began. And Nichimoku of the third chief priest who inherited from Nikko on November 15 left for Kyoto for the remonstrating to the emperor, but it was tragical and entered nirvana in a place of Tarui of Mino country and showed an everlasting example to the disciples of after ages.

Nikko yearned for Nichiren of the teacher at the time of end dropping into drowsiness. Time of 88 flowed, but, strangely, only the memory of the teacher is left. He met the teacher at 12 years old and received the name of Nikko. Thereafter he followed Nichiren to Kamakura, Izu, Sado, Koshu as if the body and a shadow. That fruitful days still dwell in his mind.

If he recalled, teacher Nichiren changed suffering to pleasure and was the magnificent personality to lead the public to the hope. The happiness that there was near him. This joy does not fade away in eternity for Nikko.

He was engulfed by sadness at the same time.

“Oh, when will I see the saint again?”

It was said that Shijo Kingo had cried in the sorrow of parting in Tatsunokuchi, Nikko was the same again.

Nikko says grace to Gohonzon which was left by the teacher.

There is the following verse to the chapter of phantom city of the Lotus Sutra.

After the Buddha entry into Nirvana

The person who heard these various Law

On the land of various Buddha of everywhere

He is always born with a teacher

It says that disciple will be born in the country of same Buddha with a teacher in the next life, and come across a teacher. Nikko engraved this sentence of the sutra on his mind and chanted the daimoku. He was anxious for seeing a teacher again so that the dry field wanted gentle rain.

Furthermore, Nikko think.

“Be that as it may, I could meet a teacher to the surprising degree at this world. If the teacher did not visit the Jissoji temple of Iwamoto, it was not me of the present. No, I was able to come across the teacher beyond the stream of time surprisingly. It is said that Law of Buddha performs no miracle, but will there be such chance again? This is rare than person watches the flower of the fig blooming once in 3000 years than the tortoise of the one eye comes across a numinous piece of tree in the ocean. I am truly a lucky person!”

The night sky of the Ueno volost was a star of the ten thousand.

Nikko became one of the stars of the vast universe and stared at himself.
