Observation of Shingon

     文永九年七月 五十一歳御作

(およ)(ほう)(ぼう)とは謗仏・謗僧なり三宝一体なる故なり、是れ涅槃(ねはん)経の文なり、

Generally speaking, to slander the Law means to slander the Buddha and to slander the Order, since the three treasures, the Buddha, the Law, and the Order, constitute a single entity. This is made clear in the Nirvana Sutra.

The Nirvana Sutra expounds that if one slander [the Law], it is tantamount to slandering the Buddha and the priesthood, since the three treasures are inseparable.

(ここ)を以て法華経には「則ち一切世間の仏種を断ず」と説く、

This is what the Lotus Sutra means when it says: “[If a person fails to have faith but instead slanders this sutra], immediately he will destroy all the seeds for becoming a Buddha in this world.”

Concerning this matter, the Lotus Sutra states, “Slander immediately destroys all the seeds of Buddhahood inherent in this world.”

是を即ち一闡提(せんだい)と名づく、

Such a person is known as an icchantika, or person of incorrigible disbelief.

[One who does this] is called an icchantika.

涅槃経の一と十と十一とを委細(いさい)に見る可きなり。

This matter is discussed in detail in the first, tenth, and eleventh volumes of the Nirvana Sutra.

You should carefully examine the first, tenth, and eleventh volumes of the Nirvana Sutra.
