顕謗法抄 (けんほうぼうしょう)

What It means to Slander the Law
On Revealing Slander

弘長二年 四十一歳御作

1262 (Age: 41)

謗法(ほうぼう)相貌(そうみょう)如何(いかん)

Question: What does it mean to slander the Law?

How does one define slander?

答えて(いわ)く、(てんだい)智者(ちしゃ)大師の梵網経(ぼんもうきょう)(しょ)に云く(ぼう)とは(そむく)なり等と云云、

Answer: The Great Teacher T’ien-t’ai Chih-che in his commentary on the Brahmā Net Sutra says, “‘To slander’ means to turn against.”

Let me respond: In his annotation on the Brahma Net Sutra, the Great and Wise Teacher Tiantai stated, “Slander is to oppose.”

法に背くが謗法にてはあるか、

Thus one who turns against the Law is slandering the Law.

Thus, to turn one’s back on the Law is, in fact, slander.

(てん)(じん)仏性論(ぶっしょうろん)に云く、()(にくむ)(そむ)くなり等と云云、

Vasubandhu in his Treatise on the Buddha Nature says, “To hate a thing is to turn against it.”

In his Treatise on the Buddha Nature Vasubandhu said, “To hate [Mahayana Buddhism] is go against [the Law] ….”

この文の心は正法を人に捨てさせるが謗法にてあるなり。

The meaning of this passage is that one who hates the Law and causes others to reject it is slandering the Law.

This passage means that causing someone to abandon the true Law is slander.
