Letter of Early Spring

    20 January 1282(Age: 61)

I was very happy to receive the letter written by the priest Hōki.

I am delighted to have read the journal written by Hoki-dono.

The joy we feel at the beginning of spring is like the blossoms that open on the trees or the plants that spring up in the mountains. I, as well as others, am filled with joy.

The flowering of trees, mountain grasses turning green; life’s exuberance at the start of spring fills everyone with joy.

I have duly received the gifts noted in your list, namely, one sack of rice, one sack of salt, thirty slabs of steamed rice cake, and one sack of taros.

I have received the journal as well as a sack of rice, a bag of salt, thirty steamed rice cakes, and a sack of taro.

Here in the remote mountains the snow falls for three days at a time, until it is over ten feet deep in the garden. The valleys turn into peaks, and the peaks seem to beladdering up to the sky.

Over the last three days, ten feet of snow fell into my garden. Deep within these mountains, valleys became peaks and peaks became stairways to heaven.

Birds and deer gather around my hermitage, but no woodcutters or herdsmen venture into the mountains.

Birds and deer sought refuge in my hermitage. The woodcutters and hunters’ path into these mountains was impassable.
