The Treasure of a Child

Children are Treasures

A daughter opens up the gate of another household, a son carries on the house in which he was born.

daughter opens the door to new family relations; a son inherits the family line.

Though one may be the ruler of the whole country of Japan, if he lacks a son, who will succeed him?

Even if one were to become the ruler of Japan but had no child of his own, to whom could be pass on his legacy?

Though he may have riches enough to fill a major world system, if he lacks a son, to whom can he bequeath them?

If one possessed treasure enough to fill an entire major world system but had no children, to whom could his treasure be left?

Therefore the three thousand and more works of non-Buddhist literature call someone who has a son a rich man, and the five thousand and more works of the Buddhist canon speak of someone with no son as a poor man.

Thus it is said in the more than three thousand volumes of non-Buddhist teachings that a person who has a child is wealthy. In the more than five thousand volumes of Buddhist teachings, it is written that a person who is childless is poor.

A son and a daughter are like the sun and moon in the sky, the directions east and west on the earth, the two wings of a bird, or the two wheels of a carriage.

Now you have two children, one girl and one boy. They are the sun and the moon in the sky, and the east and the west on earth. They are the two wings of a bird and the two wheels of a cart.

Therefore I ask that you call this son of yours Hiwaka Gozen.

For this reason, I give your newborn son the name, Hiwaka-gozen.

I will write in more detail at another time.

I will write more on another occasion.
