GOSHO 上野殿御返事(孝不孝御書) On Filial and Unfilial Conduct 1

I have received your gift of a sack of rice, sent in donation for a memorial service on the anniversary of Ueno’s passing.

I have received your offering of one bundle of rice given to mark the anniversary of the passing of [your father] Lord Ueno.

I will offer it in the presence of the Buddha and recite the verse section of the “Life Span” chapter of the Lotus Sutra.

I shall offer it to Buddha and receive the Jigage once.

As for the meaning of filial piety, only by first knowing about unfilial behavior can we know what it means to be filial.

The meaning of filial piety can best be understood by first learning about unfilial behavior.

As an example of unfilial conduct, a person called Yu-meng once struck his father, and as a result was felled by a bolt of lightning.

One example of an unfilial person is You-meng, who struck his father, and as a consequence was struck down by lightning.

Because he cursed his mother, a person called Pan-fu was attacked and devoured by a poisonous snake.

The person Ban-hu cursed her mother and was then swallowed by a venomous serpent.

King Ajātashatru killed his father, and as a result contracted white leprosy. And because he killed one of his parents, King Virūdhaka was trapped in a burning boat on a river and fell alive into the hell of incessant suffering.

King Ajatashatru contracted white leprosy after murdering his father, and King Virudhaka, who also killed his parent, was consumed in the flames of a burning boat upon a river and, while still alive, fell into the Hell of Incessant Suffering.

 In no case have such things befallen someone or killing an unrelated person.

 There have never been cases of people receiving such dramatic effects from killing strangers.
