GOSHO 南条殿御返事(白麦御書) 三

かれをもつて此れをあん()ずるに、迦葉尊者の麦のはん()はいみじくて光明如来とならせ給う。今のだんな(檀那)の白麦は、いやしくて仏にならず候べきか。

Comparing these examples with what you yourself have done, could anyone imagine that the Venerable Mahākāshyapa’s offering of a bowl of wheat was so wonderful that it entitled him to become Light Bright Thus Come One, but that the offering I have now received from this lay supporter of mine is too paltry to merit the reward of Buddhahood?

Kashyapa offered a cup of precious cooked barley and that is why become the Buddha, Light Bright. Taking this into consideration, your offering at this time, of white barley, is in no way inferior to that Kashyapa’s, so is there any reason why you too should not become a Buddha?

在世(ざいせ)の月は今も月、在世の花は今も花、むかしの功徳は今の功徳なり。

The moon when the Buddha was in the world is today the same moon, the flowers are today the same flowers, and the benefits resulting from meritorious acts in past ages are benefits today.

Just as the moon in the time of the Buddha was the same moon as today and a flower in the time of the Buddha was the same as a flower today; that which eared merit in the past still earns merit today.

その上、(かみ)一人より(しも)万民(ばんみん)までに・にくまれて山中にうえ()()にゆべき法華経の行者なり。

Moreover, I am a votary of the Lotus Sutra, hated by all, from the supreme ruler down to the masses of common people, and forced to face starvation and death here in these mountains.

The person to whom you made offerings is the person hated by everyone from the ruler above to the commoners below, the Votary of the Lotus Sutra, who might starve to death in these mountains.

これをふびんとをぼして山河をこえわたり、をくりたびて候御心ざしは、麦にはあらず(こがね)なり、金にはあらず法華経の文字なり。

And because you pity me, out of your kindness you have sent this offering, conveying it over mountains and rivers, this wheat that is not wheat but gold, not gold but the words and letters of the Lotus Sutra.

Understanding my difficult life, you sent across the mountains and rivers, an offering of barley. Because of your sincere spirit, the offering is not barley, but gold; rather than gold, it is the words of the Lotus Sutra.

我等が眼には()ぎなり、十()せつ()には此のむぎをば仏のたね()とこそ御らん候らめ。

In our eyes it is wheat, but to the ten demon daughters this wheat appears as the seeds of Buddhahood!

To us common mortals, it is only barley, but by the Ten Goddesses, this barley is perceived as the seeds of Buddhahood.
