聖人知三世事二 A Sage Knows the Three Existences of Life 2

法華経の迹門(しゃくもん)は過去の三千塵点(じんてん)(ごう)を演説す、一代超過(ちょうか)是なり。

In the theoretical teaching of the Lotus Sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha spoke about a time major world system dust particle kalpas inthe past. This teaching surpassed all the previous ones of his preaching life.

Shakyamuni Buddha established the Lotus Sutra’s superiority over all other sutras when, in the Shakumon Theoretical Teaching of the Lotus Sutra, he revealed the unimaginably distant past of the Three Thousand Dust-particle Kalpas.

本門は五百塵点劫(じんてんごう)・過去遠遠(おんのん)(ごう)をも之を演説し、又未来無数(むしゅ)(こう)の事をも宣伝し、

Moreover, in the essential teaching of the sutra, the Buddha spoke about numberless major world system dust particle kalpas ago and about all the kalpas that have ever passed, and he made proclamations concerning matters countless kalpas in the future.

In the Honmon Essential Teaching ofthe Lotus Sutra he told of an even more remote past called the Five Hundred Dust-particle Kalpas and discussed matters infinite kalpas into the future.

之に依つて之を案ずるに(くわし)過未(かみ)を知るは聖人の(もと)なり。

From the above it is clear that a thorough understanding of both the past and the future is intrinsic to the nature of a sage.

When carefully considered, all of those examples show that the ability to see into the past and future is the essential quality of a sage.

教主(きょうしゅ)釈尊(しゃくそん)既に近くは去つて(のち)三月の涅槃(ねはん)之を知り、遠くは(ごの)五百歳・広宣(こうせん)流布(るふ)疑い無き者か。

Shakyamuni Buddha, the lord of teachings, accurately predicted the near future, saying that he would enter nirvana in three months’ time. Can there then be any doubt about his prediction for the distant future, that in the last five-hundred-year period after his passing, the Lotus Sutra would spread abroad widely?

Lord teacher Shakyamuni knew the near future, correctly predicting his own nirvana three months hence. How, then, could there be any doubt regarding his prediction for the distant future that kosen-rufu would be accomplished in the Fifth Five-hundred –year Period

若し(しか)れば近きを以て遠きを(すい)し現を以て(とう)を知る、(にょ)()(そう)乃至(ないし)本末究竟(くきょう)(とう)是なり。

With such perception one can see the distant future by looking at what is close at hand. One can infer what will be from what exists in the present. This is the meaning of [the passage from the Lotus Sutra that says, “This reality consists of] the appearance . . . and their consistency from beginning to end.”

If this so, by observing the present, which is near, one can know the [causes from the] remote past and the [effects that will appear inthe] distant future. This is what is meant by the Ten Factors of Life as taught in the Lotus Sutra.
